Cycling to Lose Weight? Here’s What Really Works

Newsletter (#122)
At our latest Cycle Lean Collective Round Table, we unpacked this myth — and laid out a better, smarter way to drop body fat, improve performance, and actually enjoy cycling again.
Whether you're a new subscriber or a loyal member of the Collective, this discussion is for you. Let’s explore why more riding isn’t always the answer for fat loss and discover how we can ride stronger together.
The Misconception of "More is Better

It's a common belief that cycling more will lead to greater fat loss. Surprisingly, this isn't always the case. It is a flawed notion that burning more calories automatically equals weight loss.
For instance, a typical 20-minute bike commute might only burn a few hundred calories, barely covering a couple of snacks. Plus, higher activity levels can increase hunger, leading to greater calorie consumption. Our bodies adapt quickly; as we become more efficient at burning calories, the weight loss effect diminishes.
The Role of Nutrition

Your nutrition is the cornerstone of weight management. Exercising more increases hunger, making it easy to overeat. It's crucial to control calorie intake by maintaining a sensible eating routine. We often overlook that nutrition plays a bigger role in weight loss than exercise alone. Balanced meals and snacks throughout the day can help stabilise energy levels, reduce overeating, and support your cycling performance.
Embrace Recovery and Rest

Rest is a vital component of your training regimen. Overexertion can lead to increased fatigue and stress, disrupting sleep and making it harder to manage calorie intake. Proper rest allows the body to recover, reduces stress hormones, and prevents mental burnout. Embrace rest days as they are as crucial to your progress as your days on the bike. This can help maintain your love for cycling and ensure you continue to enjoy the journey.
Strength Training is Key

Consider integrating weight training into your routine. Building muscle can enhance cycling performance and improve metabolism, facilitating weight management. Muscle tissue requires more energy, boosting your metabolism, which helps in managing body fat more effectively. Aim to include weight sessions two to three times weekly, especially during off-seasons.
Quality over Quantity

Aim for quality and structured training rather than accumulating ‘junk miles.’ Every ride should have a purpose. This could involve targeting specific fitness goals or simply enjoying a leisurely ride with friends. Establishing a clear purpose for each session can make your cycling experience more rewarding and beneficial.
Avoiding Burnout

Cycling excessively without adequate rest and recovery can lead to mental and physical fatigue. Listen to your body to avoid overtraining. Symptoms such as an inability to elevate your heart rate, a dislike for rides, or constant tiredness are red flags. Should these arise, taking a full week off from training might be necessary.
Final Thoughts:
More cycling isn't the answer.
Smarter cycling is.
Focus on:
✅ Managing calories
✅ Lifting weights
✅ Training with structure
✅ Resting with intention
That’s how you build a leaner, stronger, happier cyclist — without riding yourself into the ground.
