How Danny Lost Weight And Added 20 Watts Without Training Like A Pro
The Climb (#190)
Introduction
12 weeks ago, Danny came to me with a pretty simple goal.
He wanted to get faster on the bike.
He wanted to lose weight.
And he wanted to see if he could finally follow a structured training and nutrition plan properly.
He had never really followed a structured cycling plan before.
He had never really followed a structured nutrition plan either.
But he was ready to give both a proper shot.
His words were basically:
“If I can get faster on the bike and lose weight at the same time, it’s a win/win for me.”
And that’s the goal a lot of cyclists have.
You don’t just want the scale to move.
You don’t just want an FTP number to look better.
You want to feel the difference when you ride.
You want to hang on when the group starts pushing.
You want to climb better.
You want to feel stronger.
You want to know the work you’re doing is actually leading somewhere.
But with Danny, there was one challenge from the start.
He is an accountant.
He has a busy life outside cycling.
And his biggest concern before we started was:
“Hopefully I have enough time and energy to take full advantage of the coaching and do it right.”
That was the real problem we had to solve.
Not building the perfect training programme on paper.
But creating something Danny could actually follow when real life inevitably got in the way.
And over the next 12 weeks, it definitely did.
There were holidays.
The World Cup.
Kids’ parties.
Some pretty extreme summer heat.
And the usual weekends where routine disappears and it becomes incredibly easy to undo five good days in about 48 hours.
So the plan could not rely on Danny living like a professional cyclist.
Because he isn’t one.
He has a job.
He has family commitments.
He has a normal life.
And that is exactly why the plan had to be built around reality.
The Results

Over the 12 weeks, Danny made brilliant progress.
Weight: 175lbs → 168lbs
That’s roughly 3kg down.
FTP: 170w → 190w
That’s 20 watts added to his threshold power.
But my favourite number is this one:
Watts/kg: 2.14 → 2.49
That’s around a 16% improvement in his power-to-weight ratio.
And Danny can actually feel that difference.
Before, when his weekend group ride ramped up the pace, he would start to struggle.
When things got spicy, he would find himself getting dropped.
Now?
He can hang on.
He is still there when the pace lifts.
He can get to the final sprint.
And for me, that is the real win.
Because an FTP number going up in TrainingPeaks is nice.
But being able to do things on the bike that you couldn’t do 12 weeks ago is much better.
That is what matters.
We Didn’t Just Tell Him To Eat Less

One of the biggest areas we worked on was Danny’s nutrition.
But the answer was not simply eating less while cycling.
In fact, it was almost the opposite.
We focused on helping him fuel his rides better so he had the energy to complete the sessions properly and ride strongly.
Then we looked at his food away from the bike.
That is where tracking became incredibly useful.
We could see that Danny was doing brilliantly Monday to Friday.
He was consistent.
He was organised.
He was creating the deficit we needed.
Then the weekend arrived.
Kids’ parties.
Different meals.
Less routine.
More temptation.
And suddenly, some of the progress from Monday to Friday was being cancelled out.
This is where a lot of cyclists go wrong.
They think they need more discipline.
But most of the time, they need a better plan.
Instead of telling Danny he couldn’t go to a kids’ birthday party because there might be cake there, we planned for it.
We made allowances elsewhere.
We looked at the whole week rather than expecting every single day to be perfect.
That made the process far more realistic.
And because it was realistic, Danny could actually stick to it.
The Power Of A Plan That Fits Real Life

This is where coaching becomes useful.
Anyone can write a hard training plan.
Anyone can tell you to eat less.
Anyone can give you a list of sessions and hope you stick to them.
But a good plan has to survive contact with real life.
It needs to adjust when work gets busy.
It needs to flex around holidays.
It needs to account for family events.
It needs to consider heat, fatigue, motivation, stress, sleep, and everything else going on outside cycling.
Because the best plan in the world is useless if you can’t follow it.
With Danny, the focus was not perfection.
It was consistency.
He nailed his structured indoor sessions.
He tracked his food.
He gave me the data we needed to make good decisions.
He communicated properly.
And he bought into the process.
Basically, he became the star student.
Although considering he’s an accountant, I probably shouldn’t be surprised that he was good with the numbers.
What Danny Said
What I really liked about Danny’s feedback at the end was this:
“Neil is very hands-on, attentive, and really listens to my needs. He provides the right tools and guidance while making you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.”
But the most important part was this:
“He took my individual circumstances into consideration and adapted the exercise program around my lifestyle and any unexpected events that came up.”
That is exactly what coaching should be.
Not a rigid plan that falls apart the moment life gets busy.
Not a generic programme that assumes every week will be perfect.
Not a set of rules that only work if you live like a full-time athlete.
A proper coaching plan should adapt to the person in front of you.
Their lifestyle.
Their training history.
Their goals.
Their work.
Their family.
Their energy.
Their real life.
The Big Lesson

Danny’s results did not come from doing anything extreme.
He did not need to starve himself.
He did not need to ride endless hours.
He did not need to give up his weekends.
He did not need to train like a professional cyclist.
He needed structure.
He needed accountability.
He needed better fuelling.
He needed a nutrition strategy that worked across the whole week.
And he needed a plan that could adapt when life got messy.
That is why he was able to lose weight and improve his FTP at the same time.
Not because everything was perfect.
But because the plan was built for imperfect weeks.
What Happens Next
I’m incredibly proud of what Danny has achieved.
And he is not finished.
Danny has now joined us inside The Cycle Lean Project, where the next goal is to shift a little more weight while building on the fitness we have already created.
Because now we have a much stronger foundation to work from.
And if we can continue increasing his FTP while bringing his weight down, that 2.49 watts/kg has plenty of room to climb.
What This Means For You
So if you’re sitting there wondering what you could realistically achieve over the next 8 weeks inside Cycle Lean, Danny is a pretty good example of what can happen when you combine:
Accountability.
Structured training.
Better fuelling.
Nutrition support.
And a plan that actually works around your life.
You do not need to train like a pro.
You do not need to be perfect every day.
You do not need to choose between losing weight and riding stronger.
You need the right structure.
And you need a plan you can actually follow.
Cycle Lean Is Now Open
Places are still available inside The Cycle Lean Project, but we are closing the doors this Friday.
